What informs our resources
We begin with primary government materials whenever they are available. These include current IRS forms and instructions, state corporation-office instructions, charity-registration agencies, statutes, and official fee schedules. We use secondary explanations only as context—not as a substitute for the controlling source.
Our content and document workflows are designed with compliance and program-management discipline. Public resources are published under the Start Your Cause organization rather than attributed to an individual.
Our review process
- Identify the controlling question. We separate federal tax exemption, state formation, charitable solicitation, governance, and recurring compliance because different agencies control each step.
- Locate authoritative instructions. We prioritize the IRS, state corporation offices, attorneys general or charity regulators, revenue departments, and enacted statutes.
- Translate without expanding the claim. We explain the requirement in plain language while preserving exceptions, thresholds, and agency-specific definitions.
- Add practical boundaries. We distinguish templates and guidance from documents that must be signed, filed, paid for, or reviewed by a qualified professional.
- Date the review. Major guides show a reviewed or modified date so readers can judge freshness and recheck current agency instructions.
- Correct when needed. Readers can report a changed form, fee, deadline, or broken official link to hello@startyourcause.org.

How state information is handled
State requirements can involve several agencies and can change without notice. Our state resources identify the relevant corporation office, charity regulator, tax department, filing form, and government fee when verified. The 50-state filing directory links readers back to official state pathways.
When a current amount or rule has not been verified, we say so instead of estimating. Before filing, customers should confirm the current form, fee, delivery method, processing rules, and signing requirements on the responsible agency's website.
What Start Your Cause does—and does not do
- We provide: educational guides, guided questions, customizable document templates, checklists, and filing-path explanations.
- Customers handle: reviewing, signing, submitting, and paying for state and federal filings.
- We do not: act as a law firm, tax adviser, state agency, or the IRS; submit filings; pay government fees; guarantee approval; or decide fact-specific legal or tax questions.
- Professional review matters: customers should consider a licensed attorney or qualified tax professional when their structure, activities, compensation, relationships, fundraising, or filing history is complex.
Testimonials and partnerships
Start Your Cause will publish a customer testimonial only with permission and will not invent names, results, review counts, or customer totals. A listed organization or logo must reflect a real, authorized relationship. Sharing one of our free resources does not imply that a government agency, library, nonprofit, or professional endorses our paid service.
