How to get an EIN for a nonprofit

An EIN is the organization’s federal tax identification number. The IRS issues it for free, and you need it before applying for 501(c)(3) recognition.

Do not pay a third-party site just to obtain an EIN. Apply directly through IRS.gov. Start Your Cause does not charge for or submit the EIN application.
  1. Form the entity first. Complete state incorporation so the legal name and formation date are settled.
  2. Choose the responsible party. This is generally the person who ultimately controls or manages the organization.
  3. Gather the legal details. Have the exact name, mailing address, formation date, entity type, and reason for applying.
  4. Apply with the IRS. Eligible U.S.-based applicants can use the IRS online EIN process; other applicants may need Form SS-4.
  5. Save the confirmation. Store the EIN letter with permanent corporate records and use the number consistently.

Do you need employees?

No. The IRS says every tax-exempt organization should have an EIN, even when it has no employees. The EIN is required on the tax-exemption application.

Avoid common mistakes

  • Applying before the legal entity exists
  • Using a name that differs from the filed Articles
  • Requesting multiple EINs for the same organization
  • Losing the confirmation notice
